Emerging electric vehicle maker Mullen Technologies has revealed plans to produce more than 100,000 vehicles using lithium-sulfur pouch format batteries developed by NexTech.
The strategic partnership between the two firms could see Mullen deliver electric vehicle packs under $90/kWh using NexTech Batteries’ technology, which uses sulphur sourced from recycling oil refinement by-products.
The announcement came in the same week it signed a definitive agreement to purchase a turn-key manufacturing facility in Mississippi, US.
Under Mullen ownership, the five-year-old facility will be called the Mullen’s Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Center (AMEC) and Proving Grounds.
The facility will enable the California, US-based company to “innovate its manufacturing processes and optimise product design”.
Bill Burger, NexTech founder and CEO, said: “Electric mobility is at the heart of our purpose, and making batteries affordable, sustainable and safe are some of the most important technological challenges needing to be solved.
“Better EVs and higher energy density are clearly key to achieving these goals.”
Mullen aims to launch its first-generation vehicle with NexTech’s current cells in late 2023, and will work in parallel to phase-in their next generation solid-state battery technology into its pack designs.
