Tesvolt begins first stage of its European lithium-ion ESS manufacturing plant despite Covid-19

Energy storage manufacturer Tesvolt began semi-automated production of its commercial lithium-ion systems in Wittenberg, Germany, on 1 April

The production process is semi-automated full-cycling, with every battery module fully charged and discharged and checked for anomalies in terms of temperature, voltage and internal resistance.

Firms sign MoU to develop and commercialise vanadium redox flow batteries

Minerals firm VanadiumCorp Resource announced a partnership to develop vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) energy storage systems with Indian company Delectrik Systems.

The memorandum of understanding aims to develop and scale up commercial production of VRFB systems, electrolytes and model application uses.

Innolith secures tax break to deploy 12MW of storage in US

Inorganic battery technology firm Innolith plan to build two grid-scale energy storage systems in Maryland, US, to compliment its lithium-ion Gridbank system from the now defunct Alevo. 

The two new battery storage facilities– 4.8MW and 7.3MW–should be operational in Washington County by late 2020 or 2021, according to local press reports who quoted Stephen Wiley, vice president of Innolith’s US business development.

US/China joint venture to target Asia Pacific energy storage market

China firm GCL System Integration and US company Powin Energy have formed a joint venture to target Asia-Pacific’s front-of-the-meter energy storage systems market.

The new firm, branded as G-Powin Energy Solution, will use lithium-ion phosphate batteries in its G-Powin Solution system, which also contain DC battery racks, BMS, containerisation, DC collection/protection, power control system integration and energy management systems (EMS).

ABB opens Swiss factory to manufacture lithium-ion modules for mobile applications

Swiss technology firm ABB is making lithium-ion energy storage systems for mobility applications at a new production facility in Baden, Switzerland.

The systems will be used in railway, trollybus, e-bus and e-truck applications in Swiss cities including Zürich, Lausanne and Fribourg.

Australia adopts its first standards to ensure safe delivery of energy storage projects

Australia’s first rules governing the safe installation of energy storage systems were introduced on 11 October, five years after consultation on the guidelines first began.

Non-profit standards organisation Standards Australia has published AS/NZS 5139:2019, Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment.

Russia to ignore lithium-ion and lead-acid in growing ESS industry

Russia’s energy storage system (ESS) market is forecast to reach $3 billion by 2025 as production costs fall during the next five years, predicts the country’s Ministry of Energy.

However, neither lithium-ion nor lead-acid was included in an approved state program that will run until 2025 for the development of ESSs in Russia.

Nuclear and aqueous Zn firms form gigawatt-scale energy storage JV

Nuclear equipment maker Holtec International and energy storage firm Eos Energy Storage (Eos) have formed a multi-gigawatt manufacturing joint venture to produce aqueous zinc batteries for industrial-scale energy storage applications. 

The JV— named Hi-Power— will build Eos’ battery systems that will then be paired with Holtec’s SMR-160 small modular reactors to store surplus power that can be used to deliver peak demand services to the grid.

UL certification first for joint venture’s second-life ESS batteries

A Japanese company that reuses electric vehicle batteries in second-life energy storage systems has become the first to be certified to UL 1974— an evaluation standard for repurposing batteries.

4R Energy Corporation, a joint venture of Nissan Motors and Sumitomo Corporation, is the first company worldwide to receive the certification from US-based international testing and certification organisation Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
