Sony’s lithium-ion batteries are being used by a Hawaiian energy storage systems start-up Blue Planet Energy.
Blue Planet Energy’s self-contained energy storage package “Blue Ion” uses olivine-based phosphate cathodes rather than conventional lithium cobalt oxide along with its proprietary architecture and software.
Entrepreneur Henk Rogers formed Blue Planet Energy Systems LLC in partnership with Vincent Paul Ponthieux and Aleks Velhner last month.
Residential and industrial energy storage systems are gaining popularity recently, if only among start-ups and automobile OEMS at the minute.
This began in earnest back in May when California’s SolarCity began offering a battery storage system using a Tesla to residential, business and government customers across the US, including Hawaii.
Blue Ion is expected to be available to consumers starting August 1.
