Industry experts are currently testing a proprietary technology that could make the production of graphite for lithium-ion anodes cheaper and easier.

Canadian minerals firm Elcora Advanced Materials claims to have developed a method of graphite manufacturing that reduces or eliminates the need for spheronisation, purification and coatings.

Two heavy weight chemical firms are in negotiations to collaborate on cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries in the North America market.

Japan’s TODA KOGYO CORP and Germany’s BASF have entered into exclusive negotiations with the goal of manufacturing a range of CAM for the automotive, consumer electronics and stationary storage markets.

Additives boost lead-acid performance by 30%

Israel scientists have discovered adding single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) on a lead-acid battery’s electrodes can improve its performance by more than 30%.

Researchers from Bar-Ilan University have found that electrodes containing SWCNT give prototype cells a greater specific capacity, improve cycle-life, have a lower resistivity, and a higher rate capability.

Hong Kong plans to combat lead-acid disposal problems

A battery-recycling centre is being opened in Hong Kong to combat the region’s growing problem of lead-acid battery disposal.

The region’s first lead-acid battery recycling centre is due to be opened in December 2016 to solve the problem of improper disposal of batteries, which led to 60 convictions in June 2016.

BESS market set to grow tenfold

The global battery energy storage system market (BESS) is expected to grow by almost ten times by 2020, according to a GlobalData report.

The sector is predicted to grow from 1.5GW in 2015 to 14GW. The main driver of the growth will be the increased share of renewable energy in the power sector and lower production costs in battery systems.

Many global BESS projects are expected to start in the near future as more wind and solar sources are being merged into power grids increasing the need for storage systems like CAES and flywheels that use electro-mechanical technology and batteries and super-capacitors based on electro-chemical technology, and pumped hydorelectric storage (PHS).

Hitachi squeezes its way into Indian SLI market through Thailand

The Japanese SLI battery maker Hitachi Chemical Company Ltd, has pulled off a deal to take 10% of the Indian SLI market in the next  three years— thanks to a free-trade agreement with Thailand.

Hitachi, which launched its commercial vehicle batteries range for the Indian market through a strategic tie-up with Ahmedabad-based Alf technologies, will have a projected turnover of US$231m (Rs 250 crore).

Jackie Chuah, director of the $5.5 billion Hitachi Chemical Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, Singapore said that the Indian market is huge for Hitachi to cover alone. "We thus entered into a strategic partnership with Ahmedabad-based Alf Technologies who have considerable experience about automotive batteries marketing and distribution pan-India," he said.

Australian battery materials start-up company Nano-Nouvelle has won deals with two US battery makers to test its battery boosting 3D nanotechnology.

The ‘Nanode’ concept - a 3D nano-structured, porous electrode that can boost the energy storage capacity of lithium-ion batteries by up to 50% - came in 2011, with a successful $3.7 million round of cleantech investor funding last June.
