Hitachi squeezes its way into Indian SLI market through Thailand

The Japanese SLI battery maker Hitachi Chemical Company Ltd, has pulled off a deal to take 10% of the Indian SLI market in the next  three years— thanks to a free-trade agreement with Thailand.

Hitachi, which launched its commercial vehicle batteries range for the Indian market through a strategic tie-up with Ahmedabad-based Alf technologies, will have a projected turnover of US$231m (Rs 250 crore).

Jackie Chuah, director of the $5.5 billion Hitachi Chemical Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, Singapore said that the Indian market is huge for Hitachi to cover alone. "We thus entered into a strategic partnership with Ahmedabad-based Alf Technologies who have considerable experience about automotive batteries marketing and distribution pan-India," he said.

Australian battery materials start-up company Nano-Nouvelle has won deals with two US battery makers to test its battery boosting 3D nanotechnology.

The ‘Nanode’ concept - a 3D nano-structured, porous electrode that can boost the energy storage capacity of lithium-ion batteries by up to 50% - came in 2011, with a successful $3.7 million round of cleantech investor funding last June.

One of China’s largest state-owned carmakers has stopped production of a sports utility model following a ruling by Beijing that EV batteries must meet certain criteria before they attract State subsidies.

JAC Motors has stopped production of its iEV6s electric sports utility vehicle (SUV), which had been powered by Samsung SDI’s batteries, exclusively chosen by the carmaker.

Chinese lithium waste is ‘horse manure crisis’ of the 1800s

Chinese analysts have compared the growing threat of waste lithium batteries to the ‘Great Horse Manure Crisis’ that swamped the world’s cities in the late 1800s.

The 19th century crisis, caused by dung coming from the colossal number of horses that were needed for transport, led to a prediction in The Times newspaper of London that ‘in 50 years every street in the capital  will be buried under nine feet of manure’.

Materials researchers in Switzerland have boosted the performance of lithium-ion batteries by up to three times by reworking how an anode accepts ions.

Scientists at the Swiss Paul Scherrer Institute PSI in Villigen and the ETH Zurich created a shorter paths for ions to travel to the anode by subjecting graphite to a rotating magnetic field.

Commercialisation of replacement lithium-ion forklift battery begins after UL approval

US-based Flux Power has gone into commercial production of its forklift batteries just months after achieving approval from Underwriters Laboratories.

Flux Power aims to assemble 100 packs a month by the end of the summer, and to double that by the end of 2016.

The firm’s Light EV battery packs for Class III pallet jack forklifts, or “walkies”, were listed to UL 2271 certification in February and were designed to replace lead-acid in forklift trucks.

Flux CEO Ron Dutt said there would be a particular focus on ’30 large customer prospects that have already piloted and/or purchased earlier generation LiFT Pack units’.

"Collectively these customers utilise an estimated 22,000 walkie pallet jacks nationwide and therefore represent aggregate sales potential of over $65 million in walkie LiFT Pack units alone,” he said.

“Based on this... we are confident in our ability to achieve LiFT Pack sales of between $3 and $6 million over the next 12 months.”
