Korea increases market share as lithium-ion battery manufacturing use in EVs grows YoY

Annual global battery consumption in registered electric vehicles jumped nearly 17% last year with 117GWh of capacity installed into vehicles.

Japanese JV aims to close the circle with lithium-ion battery recycling plant in India

Automotive Electronics Power— a joint venture of Suzuki, Toshiba, and Denso — is planning to build a lithium-ion battery recycling plant in India to compliment the gigafactory it plans to develop in the country.

The company aims to build a recycling facility capable of recovering metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese from used lithium-ion batteries.

Imports of lithium-ion batteries continue to rise as India embraces the technology

There is no doubt India is one of the biggest emerging battery markets in the world, but a lack of manufacturing facilities means it had to import $1.2 billion (₹8,777crore) worth of lithium-ion in 2019.

India imported 713 million lithium-ion batteries from 1 January to 30 November last year, more than doubling imports of the technology within three years.

BMZ Group and VDE form strategic partnership to push European battery industry agenda

UK firm deploys grid-scale second-life lithium-ion energy storage system in Belgium

UK company Connected Energy has commissioned its largest second-life battery energy storage system to date using repurposed electric vehicle packs from Renault. 

The 720kWh/1.2MW E-STOR system is installed at Umicore’s industrial site in Belgium and uses batteries from Kangoo vehicles.

Total and Groupe PSA launch joint venture to develop 48GWh European lithium-ion battery production supply chain

French fossil fuel firm Total plans to build pilot battery manufacturing facilities in Europe combining the knowledge of its lithium-ion battery making arm Saft and vehicle OEM Groupe PSA.

The partners intend to establish a joint venture named Automotive Cell Company (ACC) with the goal of producing electric vehicle batteries starting in 2023.

Li-Cycle to tap into US’ waste battery market with lithium-ion recycling facility

A lithium-ion battery recycling plant will be built in New York State after Li-Cycle Corporation gained financial backing for the $23 million facility in exchange for jobs.

The Canadian firm aims to tap into the US’ lithium-ion battery supply chain when the facility becomes fully operational in Monroe County later this year.

Electrovaya buys ceramic separator patents for lithium-ion batteries

Electrovaya has bought 30 key lithium-ion ceramic separator and battery issued patents previously owned by Litarion, the Canadian company announced on 4 February.

The patents concern the design, manufacture and application of ceramic composite separators for lithium-ion and novel battery design.

Electrovaya acquired the patents to strengthen its proprietary position in lithium-ion ceramic battery products, and provide additional intellectual property in the US, China, Japan, South Korea and Germany.

Tesla side-steps long-term lithium-ion cell supplier to partner with LG Chem and CATL for its Gigafactory 3

Vehicle and energy storage firm Tesla has entered into a partnership with South Korea’s LG Chem and China’s CATL as it looks to secure a lithium-ion battery supply for its electric cars at its Gigafactory 3 plant in Shanghai.

Rumours that Tesla would move from its exclusive cell supplier Panasonic to meet demand at the China Gigafactory 3 first surfaced last August.

*UPDATE* CATL confirmed in a stock exchange filing on Monday, 3 February, it had signed a two-year battery supply agreement with Tesla, with the US firm determining the battery purchase volume. The deal starts this July and closes June 2022.
