Tata Group is closing the loop as it builds battery manufacturing and recycling plants

Indian conglomerate Tata Group is proposing to build a battery manufacturing plant in the country bolstering its electric vehicle closed-loop potential, the company announced on 26 January. 

The company plans to invest $113 million in the 200MW plant, which will have the potential to scale up to 2GW depending on domestic and global demand, news agency Reuters has reported.

Researchers use radio frequency to detect health of commercial lithium-ion batteries

Researchers from Sandia National Laboratories have developed a radio-frequency detector that monitors a lithium-ion battery’s health while cycling— a first for commercially available batteries.

Placed inside the battery, the paper-thin magnetic resonance detector could help researchers better understand and characterise batteries to improve them for renewable storage and national security applications.

JV will see Canadian and Korean firms partner to build vanadium redox flow battery plant in US

Metals exploration firm Margaret Lake Diamonds and Korid Energy Company are set to build a vanadium redox flow battery-making plant in the US.

The Canadian firm and Korid, a subsidiary of Korean company DST, announced the joint venture to construct a factory on 27 January.

US state strengthens Korean links as it welcomes lithium materials maker Enchem

Korean firm Enchem is set to build two plants in Georgia, US, to manufacture lithium battery electrolyte and electrostatic double-layer capacitors (ELDC).

The state’s governor Brian Kemp announced the $61.35 million project in Jackson County, which builds on the success of the south-eastern state in attracting Korean battery giant SK Innovations

Cash boost allows Welsh firm to scale-up development of its sodium-ion pouch cell

Welsh battery developer Deregallera is preparing to commission a pilot-scale sodium-ion pouch cell production line after securing a government grant.

The company will move from prototype laboratory-scale testing to manufacturing packaged cells that conform to industrial standard regulations in large commercial-scale batteries.

New York Power Authority chooses zinc-air for energy storage project

Energy storage firm Zinc8 Energy Solutions announced plans on 17 January to deploy a 100kW/1MWh zinc-air battery energy storage system in New York state.

The project by Canadian firm, formerly MGX Renewables, follows a cooperation agreement with state public power organisation New York Power Authority (NYPA).

Korea’s planned recycling facility to recover 10,000 tpy of lithium-ion material

Korean firm GS E&C has announce plans to build a 120,000m2 lithium-ion battery recycling facility with the goal of recovering 10,000 tonnes of materials per year.

The engineering, procurement and construction company will initially invest around KRW100 billion ($86 million) toward the plant in the next two years, the company confirmed on 9 January.

Lithium-air batteries take a step closer to commercialisation

Researchers in Korea claim to have developed a lithium-air battery that has a 300km driving range in an electric vehicle.

The team from Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) university has developed a cathode made from nickel cobalt sulphide nanoflakes placed on a porous graphene that was doped with sulphur.

Materials firm sets out plans for 20,000tpy battery recycling centre in US

Materials extraction, mining, and battery recycling firm American Battery Metals Corporation (ABMC) has announced plans for a lithium-ion battery recycling plant in its home state of Nevada, US.

The company said on 7 January it would build a scalable, commercial lithium-ion battery recycling facility that would be fully operational in the second half of this year.

Battery maker Varta buys back its consumer brand amid EC competition concerns

Battery maker Varta has bought back Europe-based Varta Consumer Batteries 18 years after selling it to US company Rayovac Corporation (latterly Spectrum Brands) for $262 million.

The German manufacturer completed the buy out of the company for an enterprise value of €180 million ($200 million) from US-based Energizer Holdings subject to a closing balance sheet to be prepared on the closing date.
