Corvus Energy turns tide for ferries with Li storage

Mon, 02/04/2019 - 00:00 -- Hugh Finzel

Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) has selected Corvus Energy to supply lithium-ion energy storage systems (ESS) for five new all-electric ferries.

The ferries— being built in Leirvik, Sogn, by Havyard for Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1— will all be of Havyard 932 design, 67 metres in length, and will carry 50 cars.

Each ferry will be equipped with an “air-cooled Corvus Orca ESS that will supply electrical power to the ferry’s NES all-electric power and propulsion system”.

Corvus Energy lithium-ion ESS to help power Chinese port

Fri, 02/19/2016 - 11:31 -- Paul Crompton
Corvus Energy lithium-ion ESS to help power Chinese port

Corvus Energy has signed a deal to provide lithium-ion polymer Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) for nine retrofit hybrid cranes (RTGs) in the Port of Shanghai, China.

The nine hybrid cranes will bring the overall total to 21 hybrid RTG’s at the port in a bid to cut diesel fuel emissions.

The ESS can re-charge from regenerative braking energy when a container is lowered and be operated on “full electric” battery power  during traditional idling times.

The 21 RTGs operating with Corvus ESS technology will reportedly eliminate 5,300 metric tonnes of CO2 per year equal to removing 1,143 cars from the road each year.

“We are pleased to see the proven operational performance of our lithium polymer batteries in some of the busiest container terminals in the world,” said Andrew Morden President & CEO Corvus Energy.

Adding: “This technology is an answer for busy port operators worldwide, who need to increase efficiencies while reducing emissions and the environmental impact of their operations”

Corvus Energy announces industry-defining lithium-ion battery system.

Mon, 02/01/2016 - 12:47 -- Paul Crompton
Corvus Energy announces industry-defining lithium-ion battery system.

Energy storage system manufacturer Corvus Energy has received industry validation of its flagship AT6500 lithium-ion energy storage product platform.

The Canadian firm will now rename the product AT6700 to reflect the validated energy capacity of 6.7kWh.

It comes after a testing programme with the Laboratory of Alternative Energy Conversion (LAEC) at Simon Fraser University, North America, and its on-going monitoring of its deployed systems.

Corvus’ industrial lithium-ion batteries are used in the maritime industry, in ferries, tugs, offshore supply vessels and port cranes.

The Corvus AT6700 has a 10C peak discharge and 3C indefinite RMS rating.

Andrew Morden, President & CEO of Corvus Energy, said: “Actively listening to our customers regarding their operational needs drove the testing programme and the continuous improvement of the AT6500, now available as AT6700.

“We will continue our industry-leading innovation with the introduction of our next-generation lithium ESS products later this year.”
