Promising lithium-ion battery recycling results as research laboratory completes tests

Battery metals firm American Manganese (AMY) has reported its technology can extract 92% of lithium, nickel, and cobalt from NCA cathode scrap material.

The results were recorded by private sector research laboratory Kemetco Research after continuous operation of the leach stage of its AMY’s RecycLiCo process.

UK battery maker signs MoU to build lithium-ion plant in Australia

UK-based battery maker AMTE (formerly AGM Batteries) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with infrastructure firm InfraNomics with the goal of making lithium batteries in Western Australia.

The MoU, signed on 15 September, will evaluate the technical and commercial viability of lithium-ion cell manufacturing in the country focused on eservices the energy storage sector.

AMTE made headlines early this year when it signed a MoU with Britishvolt, to build the UK’s first lithium-ion battery cell gigafactories servicing the automotive and energy storage markets.

UK ‘battery metals hub’ closer to realisation as Europe begins move to lithium dependence

The UK government is supporting a project by Cornish Lithium and Geothermal Engineering to construct a geothermal lithium recovery pilot plant— as Europe begins to move its battery material focus away from China.

The project aims to demonstrate that lithium can be produced from UK geothermal waters with a net zero carbon footprint.

The new global committee on lithium standards will be led by China

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has created a technical committee for standardising global lithium market — from mining to material for lithium-ion batteries. 

The upcoming ratteries regulation commission will set technical performance, safety and environmental protection for batteries.

Daimler focusing research on designing cobalt and lithium out of lithium-ion batteries

Mercedes-Benz, a subsidiary of Daimler, is researching ways to design cobalt and other “critical” materials like lithium out of lithium-ion batteries.

The German vehicle OEM is looking at a variety of post-lithium-ion batteries— mainly based on manganese— that use less critical resources as it investigates ways of increasing energy density of its technology.

China backs Taiwan firm to ramp up production of its solid-state lithium ceramic batteries

Taiwanese solid-state lithium ceramic battery developer ProLogium Technology has raised around $100 million in Series D financing from Chinese investors, reports China Money Network.

ProLogium will use the money from BOCG (Bank of China Group) Investment and FAW First Automobile Works) Group to commercialise and scale-up manufacturing of its technology.

Researchers combine tomography methods to investigate lithium-ion battery failure modes

An international team of researchers have used neutron and X-ray tomography to investigate the processes that leads to electrode capacity degradation in lithium batteries. 

Researchers from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) and University College London investigated degradation on electrode surfaces during cycling using a combination of the two tomography methods.

US state strengthens Korean links as it welcomes lithium materials maker Enchem

Korean firm Enchem is set to build two plants in Georgia, US, to manufacture lithium battery electrolyte and electrostatic double-layer capacitors (ELDC).

The state’s governor Brian Kemp announced the $61.35 million project in Jackson County, which builds on the success of the south-eastern state in attracting Korean battery giant SK Innovations

UK firms to light up Africa with repurposed lithium-ion batteries

Cells from solar lamps are to be reused to make batteries to power homes in Kenya following a partnership between lithium battery firm Aceleron and UK firm Total Access to Energy Solutions (TATES).

The first stage of the project will see Aceleron convert TATES waste lithium-ion battery cells into reusable battery packs for off-grid applications across Kenya and the surrounding area including Benin, Rwanda and Libya.

MoU paves way for Australian firm to supply recycled battery materials to Korea

Envirostream Australia, a 24% owned subsidiary of Lithium Australia, has signed a lithium-ion battery materials offtake deal that includes recycled mixed metal dust (MMD) containing cobalt, nickel and lithium.

The memorandum of understanding with South Korean battery recycler SungEel Hitech involves the exclusive supply of metals extracted from recycled lithium-ion batteries out of Australia.
