UK power market success for grid battery project

One of the first investor-owned grid-scale lithium-ion battery storage projects in the UK has been pre-qualified to supply backup power to the national grid following a capacity market auction, BBB can reveal.

Grid Battery Storage (GBSL), which formed a partnership last year with Germany’s Siemens to launch four grid-related battery projects, was among the winners of Britain’s capacity market auction.

German-Chinese joint venture for hybrid batteries

German automotive manufacturer Continental has confirmed plans to launch a battery production joint venture with China’s Sichuan Chengfei Integration Technology (CITC).

Continental said the partnership is expected to start producing 48-volt mild hybrid lithium-ion battery systems in China, by the middle of this year, targeting the European, North American and Asian electric vehicle markets.

Li-developer Tesson building 4GWh battery HQ in China

China’s lithium-ion automotive battery developer Tesson New Energy has started construction of a 4GWh battery assembly facility in the eastern city of Nanjing.

Tesson, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed Tesson Holdings, said it plans to invest more than CNY5 billion ($790 million) in building the facility in the city’s Lishui district— that will be its headquarters for operations, production and R&D.

LG Chem to design “unique” NMC battery for Mahindra

South Korean battery giant LG Chem is to work with Indian car multinational Mahindra & Mahindra to develop a “unique” NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery for electric vehicles made in India.

Under the partnership, LG Chem will design and supply its newly-developed NMC technology for the Mahindra and SsangYong series of EV— lithium-ion modules for Mahindra Electric’s vehicles— and create battery packs for the Mahindra group and other customers.

Poland agrees ‘record’ grant for LG Chem battery project

Poland is to ‘sweeten’ a deal with South Korea’s LG Chem to build a major batteries production plant in the country for electric vehicles— with a grant reportedly worth more than $70 million, BBB can reveal.

A spokesperson for Poland’s entrepreneurship and technology ministry told BBB a contract for the grant would be signed soon, but declined to say whether the cash had been part of the agreement, announced in 2016, for LG Chem to set up the plant.

Now China’s CATL ‘makes play for EU expansion’

Chinese battery giant CATL is reportedly on the lookout for a site in Europe to manufacture lithium-ion batteries for the electric vehicle market, after becoming a supplier for Volkswagen cars built in China.

According to Bloomberg, CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co) “is close to” deciding on a site in either Germany, Hungary or Poland to build what would be its first overseas automotive battery manufacturing plant.

China issues new energy battery recycling guidance

China has published a list of interim measures towards establishing a regulatory framework for the recycling of batteries from the country’s fast-developing new energy vehicle (NEV) market.

Requirements jointly issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and six other government departments, which come into force on 1 August 2018, aim to enforce the prompt recycling of lithium-ion and nickel–metal hybrid batteries.

Daimler-BAIC to build Beijing battery and car plant as Geely takes Daimler stake

German auto giant Daimler is investing in a second battery and car production plant in Beijing with its Chinese state-owned automobile partner BAIC.

Daimler told BBB the companies would jointly invest more than CNY11.9 billion ($1.9bn) in the new facility at their Beijing Benz Automotive (BBAC) joint venture making lithium-ion batteries and “high-quality premium vehicles” for Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz brand.

Bosch steps back from ‘too risky’ cells production

German auto-parts maker Bosch has confirmed it is dropping plans to manufacture battery cells and “disbanding” battery-related research as the result of “a lengthy economic assessment”.

Bosch said investing in the commercialisation of cell technologies itself— whether improved existing technologies or future ones— is “too risky” and it will instead focus on out-sourcing.

BMZ eyes Japan tie-up for cell production

German lithium-ion battery developer and producer BMZ is considering partnering with a Japanese company to launch a battery cell production plant in Europe, BBB can reveal.

BMZ founder and managing director Sven Bauer (pictured) said the move is a “serious option” for the company “and makes sense”, as it seeks to widen its supply chain and production capabilities.
