Cheaper BESS systems 'to rival fossil-fired peaking plants'

Cheaper battery storage systems are less than 20 years away from becoming a "competitive" alternative to oil and gas-fired peaking plants, according to a new International Energy Agency (IEA) study.

The cost of battery storage is projected to “decline fast” by 2040 and global BESS capacity could reach 220 giagwatts by 2040, the IEA’s World Energy Outlook 2018 said.

This would see batteries "increasingly compete with gas-fired peaking plants to manage short-run fluctuations in supply and demand"— with the scenario’s projected need for global peaking capacity set to increase by three-quarters compared to 2017.

Flow battery partnership to target major ESS markets

US firm ViZn’s zinc and iron flow battery will be used in turnkey large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) following a deal with a vertically integrated utility-scale renewable energy firm.

The strategic partnership with US company Alpha Energy will see the Texas-based firm’s technology used for large behind-the-meter, grid-edge and utility-scale front-of-the-meter applications.

China draws up hitlist of 39 lead-acid battery makers

The Chinese government is to close down 39 lead-acid battery makers that are on the list of China’s 2014 Inefficient Capacity Elimination Plan.

The plan, recently released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), seeks to eliminate 356,000 tonnes of lead, 8.48m kVAh of lead-acid battery polar plates and 5.31m kVAh of lead-acid battery assembling.

Eos Energy wins $1m funding for commercial production plant in New York

Eos Energy Storage has been awarded $1m in funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to increase production of its zinc hybrid cathode battery technology.

Called Zynth, this proprietary technology is at the heart of the company’s 1MW/6MWh Aurora energy storage system. The funding award will be used to bring production up to MW-scale and run performance and reliability testing at a state-of-the-art facility in Rochester, NY then fully commercialise the technology.

ViZn Energy Systems installs utility-tied flow battery

The project will provide insight to the benefits energy storage can provide to rural utilities and electric cooperatives in the rapidly changing power delivery market.

ViZn Energy, flow battery developer based in Montana US, has installed a 160kWh zinc flow battery for grid storage at Flathead Electric Cooperative’s Kalispell, Montana site.

The zinc flow battery will be used to demonstrate grid-tied services such as peak shaving, frequency regulation, load shifting, backup power, and the potential for black start capabilities, and evaluate the benefits of using battery storage for the end user.
